迷幻│曖昧│靡爛

看著來自喬治亞州雅典的Of Montreal由早年一隊來自美國獨立共同體The Elephant 6
Recording Company、平平實實的Indie-Pop樂團，而轉營成為近年那隊又Glam又賦予電氣舞曲兼靈魂人物Kevin
Barnes化身中性妖男Georgie Fruit的隊伍，我不知道有幾多他們的原舊樂迷可以接受到他們的這個奇妙的蛻變。但是對我來說，Of
Montreal就是愈來愈趣味盎然的樂隊。
沒錯，我對那種矯飾靡爛而帶點曖昧主義的音樂確是情有獨鍾。
出道十一年，《Skeletal Lamping》是Of
Montreal的第九張專輯，毋庸置疑是今次他們來得更見Groovy、更具Glam味，同時音樂上亦來得極其折衷主義——讓Psychedelic、
Indie-Pop、Glam Rock、Funk、Disco、Noise共冶一爐而來。
雌雄同體妖豔化身
總覺得Of Montreal的Kevin Barnes與Scissor Sisters的Jake Spears愈來愈活像一對「好姊妹」。
我愛忸怩作態的妖豔姣男音樂人。或者，這是我對同志音樂藝人都站起來的靡爛80年代音樂之一份情意結。
Jake Spears和Kevin Barnes，在台上都是Camp味十足的樂隊主唱。然而有別於Jake
Spears開宗明義的男同性戀者的身份，Kevin Barnes卻是一名「已婚男士」——妻子是前Ethnobabes樂隊成員兼設計師Nina
Aimee Grøttland，二人育有一名現年快將四歲的女兒Alabee。看過近年Kevin
Barnes的形象，你會不禁在他身上用上「性向成疑」這四個字。
尤其是自去年發表《Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?》起，Kevin
Barnes便在台上以Georgie Fruit這個「第二身份」演出，化身雌雄同體妖豔Glam Rock巨星藝人，都叫樂迷拿來跟昔日David
Bowie在70年代初中期化身的Ziggy Stardust來作相提並論。甚至他更妖到在去年2月假拉斯維加斯Art Bar舉行的Live
Gig作全裸演出，大玩情色意味。
舞吧舞吧舞吧
然而Of Montreal並非一開始便是這樣矯飾Glam味與帶著電氣舞曲節奏而來。
1997年間崛起的Of Montreal本是一支Indie-Pop，帶著一身60年代迷幻流行音樂基因底蘊。然而樂隊成員的進進出出，令Of
Montreal變成了一支圍繞Kevin為核心的樂團，甚至來到2004年專輯《Satanic Panic In The Attic》時，Of
Montreal已猶如Kevin的一人樂隊，而其曲風亦自此加入了大量電子素材，愈玩愈電；不變是他那師承The
Beatles的迷幻樂風。雖然前作《Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?》裡已有Bryan
Poole、Jamey Huggins和Heather McIntosh等舊隊友歸位，但Of
Montreal的作品仍來得電氣盎然，甚至更呈跳脫，比如當中兩曲《Faberge Falls for
Shuggie》和《Labyrinthian Pomp》，Kevin便猶如黑馬王子Prince上身。
在新作《Skeletal Lamping》裡，這幾位舊隊友亦同樣有參與。比起《Hissing Fauna, Are You the
Destroyer?》，今次歌曲來得更Funk更Groovy，而好一些作品聽來亦跟Scissor Sisters為有著異曲同工之妙。
互相平衡折衷性
正如開場曲〈Nonpareil of Favor〉由美麗的Harpischord琴音帶出到演進成Glam
Rock再遇上迷幻流行曲的變奏，矯飾華麗過後繼而築起排山倒海而來的巨大結他噪音音牆，在五分多鐘內已極具變化多端之能事。而長達七分多鐘的
〈Plastis Wafer〉，音樂網誌Drowned In Sound的碟評以「The Bee Gees遇上Sonic
Youth」作描述，但那當然不止如此吧。依我的說法，這兩曲都好比Scissor Sisters與迷幻音樂的相遇。
《Skeletal Lamping》美好之處，是折衷性得來各方面又可以互相平衡。先行單曲〈Id
Engager》以及絕頂Groovy的〈Gallery
Piece〉都是其矯飾靡爛的Disco-Funk歌曲，明快搶耳到不得了，而〈Women's Studies Victims〉、〈Beware
Our Nubile Miscreants〉和〈Mingusings〉以Indie-Dance來形容之亦錯不了，〈Triphallus, To
Punctuate!〉是Of Montreal拿手的迷幻流行曲。
要縈繞心頭的曲目，那亦有美麗夢幻而縈繞心頭迷幻Ballad之作〈Touched Something's Hollow〉和〈Death Isn't a Parallel Move〉(下半部分)，《St. Exquisite's Confessions》則是其White Soul Ballad──雖然下半部分又電氣與光怪陸離起來。
Of Montreal就是如此具有雙重性格。當然，Kevin筆下的歌詞仍是那麼引人入勝。
Of Montreal的御用設計師David Barnes是Kevin的胞弟，其迷幻設計已成樂團的標記。今次《Skeletal
Lamping》在Die-Cut雕通模切封套內，是一份要左接右接才可翻開的Inner Sleeve，委實多麼叫人愛不釋手，真的很迷幻的設計呢。
